THE GOLDEN LINDEN 2025 │ International Film Festival for New European Cinema
The Golden Linden Film Festival aims to promote the European cinema in Bulgaria and to show the latest and most interesting films from various European countries. The festival has two programs: competition and additional. The selected films for the competition program are evaluated by an international jury. It is our wish that each year the additional program of the festival features films from various parts of Europe. There is a separate section featuring new Bulgarian movies presented by their creators and actors. The festival is organized with the support of the Municipality of Stara Zagora. Entrance to all festival screenings as well as all accompanying events is free of charge. All are welcome!

In 2019, Poppandov published his autobiographical book So Have I Lived, offering personal stories and contemplations on his life and career. As he shares in his book: “I believe in rebirth. I have given life, I have built a home, I have planted a tree. So, I have lived.”
Pavel Poppandov
Pavel Poppandov (b. September 18, 1946 in Sofia) graduated from the Acting class of Prof. Boyan Danovski at the Krastyu Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) in 1975. Before committing himself to the stage, he worked as a metalworker and driver, an experience which enriched his artistic expression.
His carreer began with the role of the Cockerel in Attempt to Fly by Yordan Radichkov, staged at the Drama Theatre in Pernik. He went on to participate in more than 60 films, including A Nameless Band, The Thirteenth Fiancée of the Prince, Yesterday, Avalanche, Fifth Floor Manoeuvres, Ladies Lead, and A Dog in a Drawer.
Poppandov has worked with some of the most distinguished Bulgarian directors and has become one of the iconic faces of Bulgarian cinema in the late XX century. Co-founder of the cult television show NLO, which blends humor, music, and social satire.
Throughout his long career, Poppandov has made his mark not only as a comedic actor, but as a master of dramatic roles as well. In his own words, “Comedy or drama was never a choice I had to make—to me, they always go hand in hand, as in life.”
Poppandov is known for his dedication and exacting thoroughness in every role, bringing humanness and emotional depth even to the most trivial plots.

Eli Skorcheva – Jury Chairman
Eli Skorcheva is a renowned Bulgarian actress with a long-standing contribution to theatre, television, and cinema. Born on March 8, 1954, in Plovdiv, she graduated from the Technical School of Construction and Architecture, followed by the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts “Krastyo Sarafov.” Later, she specialized in management and marketing in the insurance business. She also starred in other notable films such as “Home for Our Children”, “Tarnovo’s Queen” (1980), and “Madam Bovari ot Sliven” (1991).
In the 1990s, Eli Skorcheva stepped away from cinema, although she continued to appear occasionally in theatrical productions.
In 2023, she made a triumphant return to the big screen, playing the lead role of Blaga in Stefan Komandarev’s film “Blaga’s Lessons”. Her powerful performance won her the Best Actress award at the prestigious 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where the film also received the Crystal Globe for Best Film and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
Her portrayal of Blaga was widely praised and marked a powerful comeback after nearly three decades away from film. Critics highlighted the emotional depth and authenticity she brought to the role, which was described as one of the most striking performances in recent Bulgarian cinema.
In 2024, Eli Skorcheva was honored with the Special Award for Lifetime Contribution to Cinema at the 11th edition of the Golden Linden International Film Festival in Stara Zagora. During the ceremony, a short retrospective film showcased highlights from her most iconic roles, and she received prolonged applause from the audience. She also unveiled her star on the Alley of the Linden Trees and planted a linden tree—a symbol of her lasting impact on Bulgarian culture.
Eli Skorcheva is not only recognized for her exceptional talent and professionalism but also admired for the courage and dedication with which she returned to the art of cinema, inspiring new generations of artists.
